Last Week's Meeting
Our program featured Diane Rocha, Director of the Delta Blood Bank.  The Delta Blood Bank services 14 hospitals in the Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. Diane informed Gateway about all the new technology that is being used today to rapidly test and prepared the blood.  Today's hospital needs have take the blood demand to 170 units per day. It was interesting to note that the biggest demand for blood comes from surgery, cancer and gunshot wounds. If you would like more information about donating blood, contact the Modesto office of the Delta Blood Bank located on West Orangeburg.

Other meeting activities:
Roger Liston was on hand to present yet another stirring episode of our Gateway Rotary Minute.

Chet Cummins reminded everyone about the great party we have planned for our Paul Harris Fun Night on Saturday September 16th at the home of Mark & Daphne Tromblee(pictured below).  All club members are resonsible for a $25 gift or cash to be delivered to Chet prior to party night.  We'll have an unusual game format, dinner and libations starting at 6 o'clock. This promises to be another fun evening for Gateway.

Kathy Boyd presented a yet another suggestion to motivate new members to Gateway.  Plans are being designed for a membership mixer where we can invite prospective members. More details to come.

Ron Posey reported on ideas for a fall fund raiser.  We have acquired the help of some wine industry executives to help in a new event for the club.  A fall wine tasting and art auction/exhibit event is in the planning stages.  Possible sites include Diablo Grande Golf Club and possible the opening of the new facilities at the Del Rio country Club. Target date for this event is Saturday, November 4th.

FINE ACTIVITY
So, who do you think celebrated their 72nd birthday with a day at the lake...waterskiing?  None other than Gary Bright...I said GARY BRIGHT. Happy Birthday Gary and thanks for the ten dollars.  Jeanette Robinson just received a check for $105 for Bruce Ramsey's dues.  Bruce seemed to have forgotten that Jeanette was our club treasurer two administrations ago.  It looks like Bruce's dues were increased to $115.  John Bettencourt turned in 12 club banners that were recently found.  He also announced that Gateway's bid to establish the Gateway Rotary Foundation has just been approved by the IRS.  John also had just returned from a trip to the San Diego Zoo to see the famous new baby panda bear on exhibit.  In true John Bettencourt fashion, John presented President Howard with the option of choosing one of four envelopes for his fine. Inside the envelopes were $25, $50, $100, and empty.  Our guest speaker selected the envelope with a check for $50.  Thanks John.  No fine from Byron Snyder this week.  Byron delivered another one of his humorous anecdotes.

MESSAGE FROM THE PREZ

And this just in...
Last week we took some friends out to a fine new restaurant, and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.  It seemed a little strange, but I ignored it. However, when the busboy brought out water and utensils, I noticed he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.
I then looked around the room and saw that all the staff had spoons in their
pocket. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I asked:
 "Why the spoon?"
"Well," he explained, "the restaurant's owners hired Anderson Consulting,
experts in efficiency, in order to revamp all our processes. After several months of statistical analysis, they concluded that customers drop their spoons 73.84 percent more often than any other utensil. This represents a drop frequency of approximately 3
spoons per table per hour.  If our personnel is prepared to deal with that contingency, we
can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 1.5 man-hours per shift."
As luck would have it I dropped my spoon and he was able to replace it with his spare spoon.  "I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now." I was rather impressed.
The waiter served our main course and I continued to look around.  Then I noticed that there was a very thin string hanging out of the waiter's fly. Looking around, I noticed that all the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. My curiosity got the better of me and before he walked off, I asked the waiter "Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?"
"Oh, certainly!" he answered, lowering his voice. "Not everyone is as observant as you.  That consulting firm I mentioned, also found out that we can save time in the restroom."
"How so?"
"See," he continued, "by tying this string to the tip of you know what, we can pull it out over the urinal without touching it and that way eliminate the need to wash the hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39 percent."
"Okay, that makes sense, but .  .  .  if the string  helps you get it out, how do you put it back in?"
"Well," he whispered, lowering his voice even further, "I don't know
about the others, but I use the spoon."
